The most common misconception in pet tech, by a wide margin: that a microchip lets you look up where your pet is. It doesn’t, and it can’t — a microchip has no battery, no GPS, and no transmitter. It’s a grain-of-rice-sized ID number that does nothing until a shelter or vet waves a scanner over it. A GPS tracker is the opposite: a battery-powered device that continuously reports your pet’s live location to your phone, for a subscription. One is identification. The other is location. They solve different halves of the lost-pet problem, which is why the real answer to “microchip vs GPS tracker” is that they’re not competing products at all.

What a microchip actually is

A pet microchip is a passive RFID implant, injected under the skin between the shoulder blades in a procedure about as involved as a vaccination. “Passive” is the key word: the chip contains no power source and sits inert until a scanner passes over it — the scanner’s radio waves briefly energize the chip, which responds with its unique ID number. The AVMA states it plainly in its microchipping FAQ: “A pet microchip is not a GPS device and cannot track your animal.”

That ID number is also not your contact info. It’s a pointer into a registry — a database run by the chip company where you register your name and phone number. This is where microchips fail in practice: an unregistered chip, or one registered to a phone number from two moves ago, identifies nobody. (US chips mostly follow the ISO standard at 134.2 kHz; universal scanners at shelters read essentially all common chips, so chip brand matters much less than registration.)

The payoff when the system works is well documented. In a study tracking more than 7,700 microchipped shelter animals, published in JAVMA by Linda Lord’s team at Ohio State, microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time versus 21.9% for stray dogs overall — and microchipped cats 38.5% of the time versus a bleak 1.8% for stray cats overall. The chip roughly doubles a dog’s odds of getting home and multiplies a cat’s by twenty. It just does it after someone else has already found your pet.

What a GPS tracker actually is

A GPS tracker is a small computer on the collar: a GPS receiver that works out the pet’s position from satellites, plus a cellular radio that transmits that position to the tracker company’s servers and on to your phone. That architecture is why it does what a chip can’t — show you where your pet is right now, alert you when it leaves the yard, and draw the breadcrumb trail while you’re actively searching. And unlike a chip, a tracker has failure modes: batteries die (days to weeks between charges, not years), collars come off or get removed, and no cellular signal means no location report.

Read the rows and the shape emerges: the chip is a passive backstop that can’t be lost and never needs charging but only works after recovery; the tracker is an active search tool that works during the loss but depends on battery, collar, and coverage. Each one’s weakness is the other one’s whole job.

So which do you need?

Every pet needs the chip. At $25–60 once, with the return-to-owner numbers above, microchipping is the cheapest risk reduction in pet ownership — and many shelters chip adoptees by default. The action item for most owners isn’t getting a chip, it’s confirming the one that exists is registered to a current phone number. The tracker is for pets with real escape risk. Door-bolters, fence-clearers, off-leash hikers, rural dogs, new rescues with unknown habits. Can I look up my pet’s microchip location from my phone?

No, and any product implying otherwise is misleading you. A microchip transmits nothing on its own; its number is read at a range of inches by a scanner. If you want a location on your phone, that’s a GPS tracker, and it will come with a battery and a subscription.

Is there a GPS implant for pets?

No such product exists for consumers, and the physics are unfriendly: GPS needs a receiver, a cellular transmitter, and a battery you can recharge — none of which work sealed under skin. Every real tracking device lives on the collar.

My dog is microchipped. Do I still need to do anything?

Check the registration. Look up the chip number with the AAHA tool, confirm the registry has your current phone and address, and update it every time you move. An accurate registration is the difference between the 52.2% and 21.9% outcomes above.

Does a microchip expire or wear out?

The chip itself is designed to last the pet’s lifetime with no maintenance — no battery to die. What decays is the data: registrations go stale when owners move. Some registries also sell optional annual memberships, but keeping the basic registration current is what matters.
