How GPS Pet Trackers Work (and Why They Need Subscriptions)

Here’s the whole article in three sentences. GPS satellites broadcast one-way signals, and the tracker on your pet’s collar uses them to compute its own position — free, no account, no fee. That position is useless until it reaches your phone, so the tracker also carries a cellular radio and transmits like a tiny phone, and that — the carrier data, plus the servers and app on the other end — is what the subscription pays for. Almost everything confusing about the pet tracker market falls out of those three sentences, including why “GPS with no monthly fee” products are nearly always something else in disguise.
Now the longer version, because the details decide which product actually fits your pet.
Step 1: the collar finds itself (GPS, the free part)
The Global Positioning System is a US-government-operated constellation of satellites, each continuously broadcasting its position and an extremely precise timestamp. A GPS receiver — in your phone, your car, or your dog’s collar — listens to at least four satellites, measures how long each signal took to arrive, and solves for its own location. Two properties of this system matter for pet trackers:
It’s receive-only and free. The satellites don’t know your dog exists. There’s no GPS account, no per-use charge — the signal is a public utility, accurate to within a few meters under open sky per the government’s own performance data.
It needs sky. GPS signals are faint and don’t meaningfully penetrate buildings, dense terrain, or the crawl space your cat is hiding in. Every tracker loses satellite fix indoors — which is why trackers supplement GPS with other signals (more below).
If tracking ended at step 1, every tracker would be subscription-free. The problem is that at the end of step 1, the only thing that knows your dog’s position is the collar — which is attached to the dog you can’t find.
Step 2: the position has to travel (cellular, the paid part)
To get the position from the collar to your phone, mainstream trackers use the cellular network — specifically LTE-M, a low-bandwidth, low-power flavor of LTE built for small battery devices. The collar is, functionally, a phone with no screen: it has a SIM, it connects to towers, and somebody pays the carrier for that connection every month.
That somebody is you, via the subscription. It’s not an app fee — it’s a recurring carrier bill plus the maker’s servers, and it’s structural. A Tractive DOG 6 costs $79 upfront, but the Basic plan at $108/year is what keeps the SIM alive; over three years the realistic total is about $331. Fi’s version of the same math lands around $548. The maker sells hardware near cost and earns on the plan — the collar is the loss leader, the plan is the product.
Two consequences of the cellular step are worth internalizing:
- No coverage, no tracking. The collar can know exactly where it is and have no way to tell you. Cellular trackers inherit the same dead zones as your phone — deep rural areas, basements, dense woods. - Transmitting is the battery cost. Computing a GPS fix is cheap; radioing it out constantly is not. That’s why every tracker’s live mode (Tractive: updates every few seconds) drains the battery in hours while standby lasts days or weeks — and why battery ratings assume the tracker mostly isn’t transmitting.
Step 3: the tricks that save battery (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, UWB)
Because cellular transmission is expensive in watts and dollars, trackers cheat wherever they can:
Wi-Fi as a “home” sensor. Tractive’s Power Saving Zones and Fi’s home-base logic both work the same way: when the collar can see a known Wi-Fi network, the pet is assumed home and the tracker throttles GPS and cellular way down. This is where headline battery ratings come from — “up to 14 days” describes a dog napping next to the router, not a dog using the feature you bought the tracker for.
Bluetooth for the last few meters. Once you’re within a few dozen feet, your phone can talk to the collar directly, no tower needed — useful for the “which bush is she under” endgame.
Crowd-sourced Bluetooth instead of GPS entirely. This is the AirTag’s whole design: no GPS receiver, no cellular radio, just a Bluetooth beacon that nearby iPhones detect and report — those phones contribute their own location. It’s why an AirTag costs $29 with no subscription and runs a year on a coin cell, and also why it can’t do live tracking: you learn where your pet was when a stranger’s iPhone passed by. So can you have GPS without a subscription?

Any product claiming live nationwide GPS with no subscription and none of those three mechanisms is describing physics that doesn’t exist. That single filter disposes of most of what ranks for “no monthly fee pet tracker.”
One adjacent confusion worth clearing while we’re here: a microchip is none of the above. No GPS, no radio, no battery — it’s a passive ID number readable by a scanner at a range of inches. What this means when you’re buying
Judge the plan, not the collar. The hardware price is marketing; the subscription is the product. Compute the three-year total before comparing anything else — it’s the method behind every ranking in our best GPS trackers guide.
Check coverage where your pet actually roams. Multi-carrier trackers degrade more gracefully than single-carrier ones, and no cellular tracker works off-grid.
Read battery claims as best-case. The rating assumes power-saving zones and minimal live tracking. Your worst day — the escape — is a live-tracking day, so plan charging around the pessimistic number.
FAQ
Does the GPS part of a tracker cost the company anything?
No. GPS is a free, receive-only public signal operated by the US government. Every dollar of the subscription is on the communication side: cellular data, servers, and the app.
Why does live tracking kill the battery so fast?
Because the expensive operation is transmitting, not locating. Live mode means near-continuous cellular transmission — updates every few seconds on Tractive — versus a periodic check-in in standby. Same reason your phone dies fast on a hotspot.
Do pet trackers work internationally?

Why not just use an old phone on the collar?
People try. A phone is heavier than any purpose-built tracker, its battery lasts a day rather than a week, it needs its own plan anyway, and it isn’t built to be soaked, frozen, and slammed into fence posts. The purpose-built collar is the same architecture, ruggedized and power-optimized.
