• August 31, 2025 — Whistle trackers stopped working. Not “stopped getting updates” — stopped working. These are connected devices; when the service behind them shuts down, the hardware becomes a plastic pendant.
• September 30, 2025 — the deadline for Whistle owners to claim a free replacement Tractive tracker by submitting their device’s serial number. Tractive also credited prepaid Whistle subscription balances to new Tractive accounts, and gave two free months of Tractive service to Whistle owners who had no active subscription at shutdown.
• August 2026 (now) — the migration window has been closed for almost a year. Whistle sells nothing, services nothing, and its domain forwards to its acquirer.

If those dates sting because you missed the window: the free-replacement offer was time-boxed and, as far as Tractive’s public communications indicate, it ended when it ended. It costs nothing to ask Tractive support whether any goodwill remains, but plan your budget as if the answer is no.

If you still own a Whistle tracker

Three situations, three answers:

You have a Whistle on your dog’s collar right now. It has not been tracking anything since August 2025. If you’ve been treating it as a safety net, you don’t have one. That’s worth knowing today rather than the day your dog gets out.

One lesson worth keeping

Whistle wasn’t a fly-by-night Kickstarter. It was owned by Mars Petcare — one of the largest pet companies on Earth — and it still shut down with about a month’s notice on the hardware. Every subscription tracker you can buy today, Tractive and Fi included, carries the same structural dependency: the collar is only as alive as the company’s servers.

That’s not a reason to skip GPS tracking. Can I still use my Whistle tracker in 2026?
